If I Tebow today, will God still love me tomorrow?
People are always looking for some kind of tangible sign from God that reassures us that we’re not alone. The Tebow phenomenon was a perfect example of how much we all want to believe there’s something greater than we are, and that it’s on our side. Here’s this young football player who appears to be fluent in “sign language” and has somehow figured out how to connect with God. Does Tebow have some kind of direct line to the Creator that we don’t know about, we ask ourselves? How is he getting such powerful signs from his Higher Power? Did he really manifest that halo cloud that hovered over Mile Hi stadium during the game with the Pittsbugh Steelers? Lots of people have pictures of it; I guess it must be true. So, we mumble under our breaths, “I want what he’s having. If I Tebow regularly, will God like me too?” But Tebow lost his last game. Now, what do we do? Why did that happen? All the signs were there that Tebow was the chosen one. So, how come God abandoned him in the most important game of his life? Maybe there really isn’t anything to this God thing after all. Someone should take down that Tebowing site. It gives people false hope. What’s important to remember is that we co-create with God — we don’t get to sit in our Lazy-Boys, kicking back a few beers while God plans out the life of our dreams. God can help us jumpstart our Good Fortune, but it’s up to us to follow through. It’s all part of the human experience – trial and error, success and failure, learning and learning anew. It’s what we do with those experiences that determines whether or not we have our happily ever after. Part of the problem is that we continually look for BIG signs to affirm our belief in God. We want the parting of the red sea kind of signs, the successful Hail-Mary Pass type signs that take us from rage to rapture in 30 seconds. In focusing on the over-the-top manifestations of our requests for a sign from God, we totally miss the day-to-day input we are constantly getting from cosmic management. If we start noticing the day to day stuff, those signs start feeling Like BIG signs because we start seeing dramatic changes in our attitudes, our feelings and the way our lives begin to play out. They say in the theatre that there are no small parts, only small actors. In our relationship with God, there are no small signs, only inattentive people. Or, you could also say, there are no small signs, only un-conscious people. If we want to raise our consciousness, we need to increase our awareness. Amazing things are going on around us all the time; it’s time we began to notice. Signs from God Don’t Come from “On High”You know you want one, even though you may not care to admit it. You know you’ve secretly wished the bush in your front yard would spontaneously ignite and a voice that sounded suspiciously like that of James Earl Jones would beckon you to its flame. You’ve fantasized about stone tablets being delivered to your front door by a Charleton Heston look alike in a crudely fashioned white toga with brown strap sandals. And when that didn’t happen, you’ve at least considered pleading, begging, bargaining for, issuing threats and/or ultimatums, and in moments when you had nothing to lose, even demanded that God send some kind of SIGN to indicate He/she was paying attention. Come on, God. This human existence is no picnic.Read more...
